Ok, I know this is probably a stupid question but I can't seem to figure it out.

The computer at the office- I have an excel file. I double click it- Excel opens but the file does not. I have to go through File- Open- blah.
Same thing happens if I right click and use 'Open With'.

Any ideas on how to fix this?

Thanks!!

-Open any Explorer window.
-Open the Tools menu, then click on Options.
-Click on the File Types tab.
-Scroll down until you see XLS in the Extensions column, then click once on it.
-Click on Advanced.
-Click on Open in the Actions window, then click Edit.
-On the "Application Used to Perform this Action" line, make sure it ends with /e. If it's not there, add it. Example:
   "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\EXCEL.EXE" /e
-Click OK three times to get out. You should now be able to open spreadsheets by double-clicking.

If the person who made it has a larger screen than yours or more screens than you, it might be opening at a location outside the screen area. If all you get is blank Excel, go to the Window menu, click Arrange, then Cascade, then click OK.

I think that had me on the right path but, out screwy system, I can't click on 'advanced'.

Is there another work around.

Nope. It is any thing. Even ones that I have made.

There is, but it involves hacking the registry, and if your system is locked down so tightly that you can't manually edit file associations, you're humped. Do you have a system administrator wandering around?

We have a "computer guy" who comes in once every 2-3 months if we call him.
I am the most technically savvy person in my office.
My boss was surprised that I knew how to set up my mail server options without a step by step pictogram....

downloading open office and see if you can open the excel file with that.

Before you do anything else though, backup the critical files so that if you experiment around with them you can still get back in. Preferably on something totally external to the computer like a CD.
